Biography

Dr. Karla Badillo-Urquiola is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. She earned her PhD from the School of Modeling, Simulation, and Training at the University of Central Florida (UCF), where she was a McKnight Doctoral Fellow and an Order of Pegasus inductee, the highest honor a student can receive at UCF. She also completed her M.S. degree in Modeling and Simulation and B.Sc. degree in Psychology with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric at UCF. Dr. Badillo-Urquiola’s research lies at the intersection of Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Social Computing, Online Safety, Privacy, and Security, and Marginalized Populations. She investigates how to reduce inequalities online and improve the quality of life of vulnerable populations. Her current research focus is on adolescent online safety for at-risk youth in foster care situations. Her work has won Best Paper (top 1%), Best Paper Honorable Mention (top 5%), Best Poster, and Impact Recognition awards at top-tier international and national HCI conferences (i.e., CHI, CSCW, SOUPS) and has garnered news media coverage from WFTV, Science Daily, and Telemundo 51. Beyond research, Dr. Badillo-Urquiola is an active member of the SIGCHI Latin American HCI Community (LAIHC). As a Latina in STEM, her career aspiration is to become a tenured professor, a status shared by less than 1% of Latinas in the computing workforce. She also mentors underserved students to navigate the graduate school process in hopes of helping them find their inner strengths as computing researchers.
