Biography

Sarah Mustillo joined the Notre Dame faculty in 2014. She served as chair of the Department of Sociology from 2016-2018 and the I.A. O’Shaughnessy Dean of the College of Arts and Letters from 2018-2025. Her research examines the effects of adverse childhood experiences on trajectories of mental health, with a particular emphasis on the timing and duration of such experiences as well as gender differences. Other work focuses on advancing statistical methods for social science research, including testing group differences in categorical models and model specification for multiple imputation. Her work has been published in outlets such as the Journal of Marriage and Family, the American Journal of Sociology, and the Journal of Health and Social Behavior and she has won national awards from the Gerontological Society of America and the American Sociological Association (ASA). Additionally, she is co-authoring a book on statistical methods for dealing with missing data and working on an NIH-funded project on parent, sibling, and peer influences on initiation of substance use in adolescence. She is past secretary/treasurer for the Methods Section of the ASA, past co-editor of the American Sociological Review, and regularly taught a workshop for the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods.
