Biography

I am an historian of African Christianity, especially interested in the ways that Christian communities in Africa evolved in relationship to missionary activity, African responses, and larger contextualizing factors like colonialism (and accompanying racialization). I have taught at Notre Dame for 20 years, led ND's Center for Social Concerns for six and a half years, led international organizations in the academic study of mission and world Christianity, and taught in Africa several times. My archival research has often led me to Europe and Africa.
