Biography

Joshua Lund teaches literature, film and cultural history.  He is the author of Werner Herzog: American Nomadic (2020), The Mestizo State: Writing Race in Modern Mexico (2012), in translation as El estado mestizo (Barcelona & Mexico City: 2017) and The Impure Imagination (2006).  He is co-organizer of Men with Guns, a Ford-funded interdisciplinary and collaborative symposium on cultures of paramilitarism in the modern Americas, published as a Special Issue of The Global South (2019).  Lund’s other publications on a range of cultural topics include a co-edited and –introduced volume of scholarship on Gilberto Freyre, and recent essays in Écrans, GeoHumanities and Cultural Critique.  He was Chaire de Professeur Invité at the Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique Latine, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3.  Previously he was Professeur Invité in Arts de la Scène, de l’Image et de l’Écran at the Université Lumière Lyon 2.  Lund’s current research and pedagogical projects include: the idea of “race war”; the aesthetics of political violence; María Candelaria; transnational film; Lope de Aguirre; and the relations between capitalist expansion and narrative chaos in Latin America and beyond.
