Biography

Calvin Zimmermann is O'Shaughnessy Assistant Professor of Education in the Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received his Ph.D. in Sociology in 2018. His research expertise is in the areas of race and education. He is broadly interested in the relationship between systemic racism and early childhood education.

Zimmermann’s current research examines how racial and gendered meanings shape children's social relationships in early childhood, with a particular emphasis on school and family settings. His work contributes to race and intersectional scholarship that moves beyond examining inequalities among youth or adults, and instead demonstrates how inequalities manifest themselves early in the life course of individuals. He is primarily interested in how systems of race, class, and gender affect the school and familial experiences of young Black children.
